A person who contaminated treats with sleeping medication and provided them to minors at a summer program in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offenses against two children who were between nine and ten.

The accused was detained after eight youngsters and a grown-up experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on recently.

However, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was against a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was held in detention before a further hearing on late November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, described the defendant's actions to the court.

She stated his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.

The defendant engaged in a "sweet game" with the minors, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had engaged in this activity with the young males "for many years", and youngsters had previously become sick the next day.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in recently.

The legal representative continued: "In the summer" his family member had concerns about the situation, with valid cause.

"They decided to investigate in the man's possessions."

Mrs Prior KC explained objects including lubricant, petroleum jelly and medical needles were located, and his family member contacted the police about his suspicions.

She said the defendant went on to conduct the "sweet game" with six children that evening - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.

"Law enforcement" had not responded by that stage," she stated further.

The oversight body, the investigative body, had stated that it was investigating the police response of the situation.

The prosecutor stated the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson contacted the police a second time.

She stated the defendant then played the "sweet game" in a area of five children.
