The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
